RON SULLIVAN AND HIS ‘PHOTO RE-TOPO’ TECHNIQUE IN MODO Ron Sullivan started his career in prepress and is now employed at a major retailer in North America where he develops catalog imagery. In a new modo customer interview, Ron explains how he works to enhance customers’ online shopping experiences by providing multiple color and pattern sku options and linking them to swatches for customer shopping interaction. He creates many of these image variants from an original photograph, utilizing image editing software for color treatments and an image production system for pattern overlays. See how Ron uses modo in this fascinating workflow here. image courtesy of Ron Sullivan POWER SUBD-NURBS PLUG-IN NOW AVAILABLE FOR MODO Power SubD-NURBS is a modo Plug-in that allows you to convert Subdivision Surface meshes into NURBS-based CAD formats and then export directly to standard CAD systems. This allows modo to be used as a flexible conceptual modeling tool at the initial stage of the design process. With this Plug-in developed by IntegrityWare, you can freeform model a variety of design alternatives in modo and then transfer them to your CAD system for further refinement and engineering. modo image by Branden Coker and Paul McCrorey NEW PAUL MCCROREY VIDEOS FEATURE CAD DATA ‘ROUND-TRIP’ Paul McCrorey is a modo and CAD expert based in Louisville, Kentucky. Paul has recently created some videos on making the round-trip from modo to CAD and then back to modo in three steps: - Conceptualization – use modo subdivision surfaces to quickly build a complex shape
- Realization – use Solidworks to detail out the part and make it ‘manufacturable’
- Visualization – bring the result from CAD back into modo for texturing and rendering
For a limited time, we are including these videos at no charge when you purchase any of the following modo workflow enhancers: CAD Loaders for modo, modo for SolidWorks Kit or the new Power SubD-NURBS for modo. modeled in modo and SolidWorks and rendered in modo by Paul McCrorey YAZAN MALKOSH OFFERS MATCAP™ FILES TO MODO COMMUNITY In a fit of generosity, modo expert Yazan Malkosh has introduced the 9b mCap Library, a handy set of 100 MatCap images for use in modo 601 (MatCap is a trademark of Pixologic). Luxology Spaceship Asset Sharing Contest 2012 PAT CRANDLEY’S MODO TUTORIAL PLAYLISTS ON YOUTUBE Over the last five years, Pat Crandley has been using modo to teach fundamental ideas and principles of 3D modeling at Sacramento City College. Pat says he loves the modo community and he wants to share the series of modo video tutorials he created to help his students navigate the sometimes turbulent waters of learning 3D modeling and animation: “I designed these videos to respond to specific problems my students have encountered and it has kind of turned into a small video encyclopedia on how modo works! I’ve created a series of playlists on YouTube that nicely encapsulates the topic of the videos. There are 62 videos in all. Check them out and feel free to share!” Pat Crandley’s modo tutorial playlists on YouTube COOL FORUM AND WEB THREADS Notable threads from the Luxology Community Forum and the Interwebs601 Sculpt Kit: Now With Base Meshes! Check out Greg Brown’s cool new layouts plus soft brush presets, icon replacements, a “base man” mesh and two sample sculpt meshes – all designed to optimize the sculpting experience inside of modo 601. The Kit is still a work in progress but there is a lot of useful stuff there already. Thank you Greg! Quote of the Month “The foundational technologies behind today’s CAD software are complex and brilliant, but in some ways limited. Luxology and Autodesk are at the forefront of what will grow as a trend in the coming months and years: the repurposing of technology created for digital content creation (DCC) for use in CAD.” – Randall S. Newton, Managing Editor, GraphicSpeak Fabric Magic Rubiks More modo magic from Brasil! Lightshock_studio did a new take on the iconic Rubik’s Cube for Casa36.
